fetch friends with flair

A little over a week ago I hosted a small get-together  with three of my best friends. We made yummy drinks, cooked fun snacks, and played some hilarious games. : )  I didn’t plan anything too fancy, but I added a few fun things to spice up the night and wanted to share them with you! photo 2

I had some plastic Martini glasses lying around so I set those out. While I was at target collecting some goodies for the night, I stumbled upon these adorable candy necklaces in the dollar section, so I just had to get them. I didn’t know how I would use them immediately, but as I was setting out the glasses I thought they would make great accents for the glasses!photo 1

Since there were only four of us, I decided to add a little more personalization by writing place cards for each of us. I got a bit carried away and added some pink confetti at the last second just to add something extra. It’s not the most elaborate or cute thing I’ve ever done, but it was fun and added some flair to a normal get-together.

24th Unisource Paper Show

I know it’s been a little while since I posted and I apologize for that, it’s been a crazy couple of weeks full of family visits, school projects, and presentations. Earlier this week, instead of going to class, a couple of my friends and I decided to attend the Unisource Paper Show.

IMG_3175May not sound too exciting to the average person, but for a graphic designer, it’s pretty much one of the coolest places. Not only do you get to geek out with a bunch of people over paper products, but you get so much free stuff! I just want to take a moment to show some of the amazing things I got to take home. : )

The sheer amount of stuff I brought home was ridiculous. I had 2 full bags, double-lined. Here is just one of them.

There were some incredible posters. This pink one is my fave.

I grabbed almost everything I saw just because of how well it was all designed.

Even though there is not use for these, it is one of my favorite things I picked up. An adorable wedding invitation suite for Enve & Lope. How cute, right?

To go along with the whole Enve & Lope story, there were notes to and from each of them that were brilliantly designed as well.

cupcakes & craft fairs

Today, I want to tell you about the wonderful weekend I had. On Saturday, I was fortunate enough to make it up to Wicker Park to check out the Renegade Craft Fair.

IMG_3097There were over 300 venders from all over the country! It was a crafter’s paradise. Luckily, I was able to snap a few photos of some of my favorite items I stumbled upon. Enjoy! And if you weren’t able to make it, you can live vicariously through these photos!

The first thing I saw when I walked into the fair were these amazing aztec-inspired necklaces.

These were very interesting. They are handmade guitars, but the bodies are in the shape of a square. They sounded very incredible too.

There was this amazing piano that people were playing. Even better, this kid was playing Daylight by Matt & Kim.

I think anything with maps is super cool, so naturally I was drawn to these mini-journals.

And what better way to end my weekend than with a Maple Bacon flavored cupcake from Sprinkles? The best.

a reflection of myself

As most of you know, I began my final year of college on Monday. It’s been a week full of new classes, new professors, and new inspiration. Classes began this year as they always do, with a short introduction, and then an explanation of our first project. For many of my classes, these project “descriptions” are often vague and give almost no information about the path of the assignment. As a designer, this vagueness is crucial (as painful as it is sometimes); otherwise you would want to plan your every move and already have your final project solution before you’ve even begun planning the first steps. The reason I’m saying all of is to help understand this next part a little easier. This week, I was told to choose 30 images that inspire, reflect, and interest me. That was it. There were no other instructions. I do not know what these images will be used with or for. I took these instructions to mean that these 30 images would be a representation of who I am. A bit frustrating at first, but as I began to sift through images and choose which ones I felt defined me, I learned something about myself. I’m not even sure what that thing I learned is, but somehow I feel more comfortable and in touch with who I am, not only as a designer, but as a person. Maybe being forced to define who you are in 30 images puts you in a certain state of vulnerability that allows your eyes to do the thinking, rather than your mind. Defining who you are in words is difficult enough as it is, but defining yourself with no words is the real test. This collection of images may not be a perfect representation of who I am, but I think the act of searching for a definition of self strictly through sight and imagery creates a certain awareness and understanding of yourself that words simply cannot.

I hope everyone has a fabulous weekend!

engagement photo package

Last week, Matthew & I took a trip to Stoughton, WI to visit our friends Matt & Ashley and to take their 50’s style engagement photos. This was our first time shooting engagement photos, so we were a little nervous, but Matt & Ashley made it incredibly easy for us. After their shoot, they even took us out to Madison for a night on the town! While Matthew did most of the shooting and editing, I was able to not only put in my two cents in regards to posing and props and such, but I was also in charge of figuring out how we were going to present our photos to them. I decided to go all in with the packaging, finding inspiration through our photos. Along with the CD of files, we printed some 8x10s, 5x7s, and wallets for them. I wanted to keep it simple, but also add some 50’s flare. Here’s what I eventually came up with:

I am thrilled with the result! There’s something about having a tangible package that makes receiving photos even more exciting. Matthew & I are also planning to shoot their wedding the fall, so I already have loads of ideas for our next packaged set—I can’t wait!

it started with a cupcake…

For my first  post I wanted to share a passion of mine with you: cupcakes. Lately, I have found myself incorporating cupcakes into a lot of my projects, whether it be through painting, baking, animating, etc. The project that I specifically want to share with you today is actually my final animation project for the spring semester. It’s called The Life of a Cupcake, and it will take you through the ‘life of a cupcake,’ beginning with the beating of the eggs and the mixing of the flour, and ending with the final bite. : )

All of the pieces you see in this video were drawn and animated by me over a 10 hour period. Over 2000 pictures were taken and stitched together. All of the sound effects were recorded by me as well. Took a lot of hard work, but it was such a fun piece to make and came out exactly how I pictured it would.

Here’s a peek behind the scenes:

Cupcake Animation Process

I hope you enjoy this short animation as much as I loved creating it. I hope to be sharing more of my projects, cupcake-related or otherwise, with you pretty often. I have a few big projects planned for this summer and absolutely can’t wait to share them with you!

Have a wonderful, cupcake-filled day!
